The process of
handmade upholstery can in many ways be likened to that of the
manufacture of a handmade car – the attention to detail, the use of
the best materials and craftsmanship available, the amount of time
required from start to completion. The finished product will
reflect these attributes – in style, in comfort and in durability.
At Lennegan &
Marantz we start with kiln-dried, aged beech wood – a close grained
wood known for its strength and ability to absorb tension and
weight. The frames are hand milled and the legs form part of the
frame. Jute webbing is used as the support framework for hand-tied
steel springs, which are used in both the backs and the seats or
seats only depending on the model. The size of the springs is also
adjusted depending on the softness desired. The frame is next clad
with a pad of re-enforced boar’s hair to provide the right amount of
support, comfort, resilience and weight distribution. And finally,
cushions are filled with a mixture of duck down and feathers. The
time and workmanship required for these processes will be reflected
in the final article - a luxurious, handmade product to be enjoyed
in that most important of all environments – our homes. |
